PART 1 — The Woman No One Remembered

At sunrise, Princess Elianor walked through the royal market and realized something was wrong.

No one looked at her.

Not the baker who had known her since childhood.

Not the guards who bowed whenever she passed.

Not even the old woman who sold flowers beside the fountain and always called her "little princess."

Elianor stopped in front of the woman.

"Good morning, Mara."

The old woman smiled politely.

"Good morning, Your Highness."

Elianor's heart sank.

She had called Mara by name for twenty years.

Mara had held her hand when she was a child. She had brought flowers to her mother's funeral. She had even taught Elianor how to braid her hair.

But now Mara looked at her like a stranger.

Elianor hurried back toward the castle.

At the gates, the guards crossed their spears.

"State your business."

She stared at them.

"I'm Princess Elianor."

The guards exchanged confused looks.

One of them laughed nervously.

"There is no Princess Elianor."

She felt the world tilt beneath her feet.

Then someone grabbed her arm.

It was Captain Rowan, commander of the king's guard.

He was pale.

His eyes were wide with fear.

"Come with me," he whispered.

"You remember me?"

"I don't know who you are," Rowan said.

Elianor's heart broke.

Then he leaned closer.

"But I remember that I am supposed to protect you."

He pulled her into an empty alley.

"Something is inside my head," he said. "Every time I try to remember your face, I forget something else. Your name disappears. Then your voice. Then why I care."

Elianor swallowed hard.

"Who did this?"

Rowan looked toward the castle.

"The king."

Her father.

King Aldric had always been a stern man, but he had loved his daughter more than anything.

At least, she thought he had.

They entered the castle through a forgotten servants' passage.

Elianor walked into the throne room.

Her father sat beneath the golden crown.

She expected shock.
