The Mage Who Raised the Crown Prince Was the One Who Destroyed Him

PART 1 — The Man Behind the Crown
On the night before his coronation, Crown Prince Adrian discovered that the man he loved like a father had been planning his death.
For twenty years, the kingdom of Valedorn believed the old mage, Eldric, was Adrian's greatest protector. He had found the prince as a baby after assassins slaughtered the royal guard. He had carried him through the burning palace and raised him in a hidden tower until the kingdom was safe again.
Eldric taught Adrian how to read ancient runes, command a sword, and control the strange silver magic flowing through his blood. Whenever Adrian asked about his parents, the mage always gave the same answer.
"Your father died protecting the crown. Your mother died protecting you. One day, you will finish what they began."
Adrian believed him.
Until the night he returned to the tower and found Eldric standing before a circle of black fire.
Inside the circle lay the royal crown.
But it was not the crown Adrian was supposed to wear.
It was the ancient Crown of Dominion, a forbidden relic said to grant its bearer control over every magical bloodline in Valedorn.
Adrian froze.
"Master?"
Eldric slowly turned.
For the first time in twenty years, there was no warmth in his eyes.
"You weren't supposed to come here tonight."
Adrian reached for his sword.
"What are you doing with the crown?"
Eldric sighed.
"Preparing to save the kingdom."
"From what?"
The mage looked directly at him.
"From you."
The words struck harder than any blade.
Then Eldric raised his hand.
Black chains exploded from the floor and wrapped around Adrian's arms.
"You lied to me," Adrian whispered.
"I protected you."
"You raised me."
"Yes."
"Then why are you trying to kill me?"
Eldric's expression finally cracked.
"Because your father was not murdered by assassins, Adrian."
The chains tightened.
"I killed him."
PART 2 — The Truth Beneath the Crown
Adrian stared at the man who had taught him everything.
"Why?"
Eldric stepped closer.
"Because your father discovered what you truly are."
He pointed toward Adrian's chest.
"The silver magic in your blood is not royal magic. It is ancient magic. The first kings of Valedorn stole it from a sleeping god beneath the kingdom. Every generation, that power grew stronger."
Eldric's voice trembled.
"Your father wanted to use you as a weapon. I refused. So I killed him and took you away."
Adrian's anger faltered.
"Then why betray me now?"
"Because the magic has awakened."
The black fire suddenly surged around them.
Adrian felt something enormous moving beneath the tower.
Eldric lifted the Crown of Dominion.
"If you wear the crown tomorrow, the ancient power will awaken completely. The kingdom will fall. Thousands will die."
"So you intend to kill me tonight."
Eldric looked away.
"I intend to end the bloodline before the god wakes."
For a moment, Adrian could barely breathe.
Then he remembered something.
Every lesson. Every spell. Every warning Eldric had ever given him.
And one sentence suddenly made sense.
"You always told me that magic obeys the will of its master."
Eldric looked up.
Adrian smiled sadly.
"You forgot to teach me one thing."
The silver magic inside him erupted.
The black chains shattered.
Eldric stumbled backward as the entire tower shook.
But Adrian did not attack him.
Instead, he dropped his sword.
"You raised me to become better than my father."
He walked toward the ancient crown.
"So I'm going to do exactly that."
Eldric tried to stop him.
Adrian placed his hand upon the Crown of Dominion.
The tower disappeared beneath a wave of silver light.
When the light faded, Eldric was on his knees.
The crown had turned to dust.
And beneath the tower, the sleeping god was silent once again.
Adrian looked at his old master.
"You betrayed me because you were afraid of what I might become."
Eldric lowered his head.
"I was afraid because I loved you."
Adrian's eyes filled with tears.
"Then you should have trusted the man you raised."
The next morning, Adrian walked into the throne room alone.
He became king without the ancient crown, without forbidden magic, and without the man who had raised him standing beside him.
Yet every year, on the anniversary of his coronation, Adrian visited the old tower.
Because some betrayals are born from hatred.
And others are born from love twisted by fear.
Adrian never forgave Eldric.
But he never forgot him either.
