The Princess Could Summon Dragons But Was Forbidden to Know Why

PART 1 — The Whisper Beneath the Castle

On the night Princess Elara turned eighteen, a dragon fell from the sky.

It crashed beyond the northern walls of Asteria, shaking the castle windows and turning the moon red beneath a cloud of ash. Soldiers rushed to the battlements, expecting fire.

Instead, they heard a girl whisper one word.

“Stay.”

The dragon stopped.

Elara stood barefoot on the tower balcony, still wearing the silver dress from her birthday feast. She had not meant to speak. The word had simply escaped her when she saw the enormous creature bleeding in the snow.

The dragon lowered its burning head.

Then it bowed.

Every soldier on the wall dropped to one knee.

Elara stared in disbelief. Her father, King Aldren, did not kneel. He looked terrified.

“Take the princess inside,” he ordered.

“Father, what is happening?”

“Nothing you need to understand.”

That answer frightened her more than the dragon.

Before dawn, the wounded beast vanished into the mountains. By breakfast, every servant had been warned never to mention what they had seen.

But Elara could not forget the dragon's eyes.

They had looked at her like an old friend.

Three days later, another dragon appeared.

This one landed in the royal courtyard during a thunderstorm. Its scales were black, its horns white, and its wings large enough to cover the palace gardens.

Elara stepped outside.

“You came because I called you,” she whispered.

The dragon bowed.

King Aldren arrived with twenty knights.

“Enough!” he shouted. “You are forbidden to summon them again.”

Elara turned toward him. “Why?”

The king's face went pale.

“Because if you learn why they answer you, the kingdom will burn.”

That night, Elara secretly entered the oldest wing of the castle. Beneath a forgotten library, she found a sealed stone door bearing a symbol she recognized immediately.

It was the same symbol carved into the dragon's chest.

Behind the door was a hidden chamber.

And inside it stood a portrait of a woman with Elara's face.

Underneath the portrait were six words:

“The last Dragon Queen must awaken.”

PART 2 — The Secret Beneath the Crown

Elara barely had time to breathe before the chamber doors slammed shut behind her.

Her father stood there.

For the first time in her life, the king looked like an old, frightened man rather than a ruler.

“You were never supposed to find this room,” he whispered.

“Who is she?” Elara demanded, pointing at the portrait.

King Aldren closed his eyes.

“Your mother.”

Elara's heart stopped.

Her mother had supposedly died giving birth to her. That was the story she had been told since childhood.

But the portrait showed her mother standing among dragons, wearing a crown made of black iron and dragon bone.

“She wasn't human,” Elara whispered.

“She was the last Dragon Queen.”

The king finally told her the truth.

Long ago, dragons had protected Asteria. The Dragon Queen could summon every dragon in the world, but her power came with a terrible price. Each time she called them, a piece of her life was transferred into their ancient blood.

When Elara's mother discovered that the kingdom's nobles planned to enslave the dragons, she fought against them.

She lost.

To save her unborn daughter, she used the last of her power to hide Elara's bloodline.

But the spell could only last until Elara turned eighteen.

“You didn't keep the truth from me to protect the kingdom,” Elara said, tears filling her eyes. “You kept it from me because you were afraid of what I would become.”

“I was afraid I would lose you,” the king answered.

Before Elara could respond, the castle exploded.

Black flames rose beyond the windows.

The royal army had betrayed them.

Hundreds of soldiers marched toward the hidden chamber, led by the kingdom's Lord Chancellor. He carried an ancient crown.

“Give us the Dragon Queen,” he shouted, “and Asteria will survive!”

Elara stepped into the courtyard.

Above her, thunder rolled.

She remembered the first dragon.

She remembered its eyes.

Then she lifted her face toward the storm.

“I don't command you,” she said. “I ask you to choose.”

For one silent moment, nothing happened.

Then the mountains began to move.

Dragons emerged from every peak, thousands of them, their wings blotting out the stars. Red dragons. Silver dragons. Ancient dragons whose names had disappeared from human history.

The soldiers fled.

The Chancellor dropped his crown.

Elara's father stood beside her, trembling.

“What will you do now?” he asked.

Elara looked at the dragons.

“The thing you were most afraid of.”

She walked toward them.

But instead of taking the Dragon Queen's crown, she picked up the fallen human crown and placed it back on her father's head.

“I won't rule dragons,” she said. “And I won't let humans rule them either.”

The oldest dragon lowered its head.

For the first time in a thousand years, humans and dragons stood together beneath the same sky.

And when dawn came, Princess Elara finally understood the secret her father had tried to bury.

The dragons had never obeyed her because she was their queen.

They answered because she was the first person in generations who had the power to set them free.

From that day forward, the princess was known not as the Dragon Queen, but as the Queen Who Chose Freedom.
