The Queen Could Break the Curse—But It Would Kill Her

PART 1 — The Queen Who Knew the Price

On the night Queen Elara discovered how to break the kingdom’s curse, the bells of the royal palace began ringing by themselves.

One bell. Then another. Then all twelve.

Elara stood alone inside the forbidden tower, holding a blackened scroll that had been sealed beneath the castle for three hundred years. Its final sentence was written in blood-red ink.

When the moon turns silver, the queen may break the curse. But the curse will take her heart in return.

Elara read the words again.

Her hands trembled.

For generations, the kingdom of Valedorn had been dying one child at a time. Every person born with royal blood suffered the same fate: on their twentieth birthday, a dark mark appeared over their heart. Before the next sunrise, they were dead.

Elara's older brother had died at nineteen.

Her mother had died at nineteen.

Her father had spent his final years searching for a cure, only to disappear into the northern mountains.

Now the curse had chosen Elara's only son, Prince Caelan.

He had turned nineteen three days ago.

That evening, the first black vein appeared beneath his skin.

Elara refused to accept his fate.

She had searched every monastery, questioned every witch, and opened every tomb beneath the kingdom. Finally, an old prisoner whispered about the tower and the spell hidden inside it.

There was only one problem.

The spell required the queen to willingly sacrifice her life.

Elara closed her eyes.

“There must be another way.”

A voice answered from the darkness.

“There isn't.”

Elara spun around.

An old man stepped from behind the stone pillars. His face was hidden beneath a silver hood.

“Who are you?” she demanded.

“The last mage who remembers what your ancestors did.”

He pointed toward the scroll.

“The curse was never placed on your bloodline by a monster.”

Elara's heart stopped.

“Then who cursed us?”

The mage looked toward the palace windows, where Caelan stood beneath the moon.

“Your first king.”

Before Elara could ask why, the palace exploded with screams.

She ran.

Caelan had collapsed.

The black mark over his heart was spreading like ink through water.

And beneath it, something was beating.

Something that was not his heart.

PART 2 — The Heart Beneath the Crown

Elara carried Caelan into the throne room while soldiers barred the doors.

The prince's body convulsed.

Then he opened his eyes.

They were completely black.

“Mother,” he whispered.

Elara froze.

Caelan smiled.

“I finally remember.”

The ancient mage entered behind her.

“The curse has awakened.”

Caelan rose from the floor without touching it.

“Our first king did not curse his descendants,” the prince said. “He cursed himself.”

The truth was worse than Elara had imagined.

Three hundred years ago, King Aeron had begged an ancient shadow spirit to save Valedorn from an invading army. The spirit agreed—but demanded the king's heart.

Aeron refused.

Instead, he offered the hearts of his future descendants.

Every royal child would live only until twenty, when the spirit would claim them.

But there was one loophole.

The curse could be broken by a queen who willingly offered her own heart to the spirit.

Elara looked at her son.

“If I do it, you live?”

Caelan shook his head.

“Not just me. Everyone born after me.”

“Then I'll do it.”

“No!” Caelan screamed.

For the first time, the shadow inside him spoke through his mouth.

“Your son belongs to us.”

Elara stepped forward.

“Then take me instead.”

The throne room went silent.

The moonlight turned silver.

Elara pressed her hand against Caelan's chest.

“A kingdom built on the sacrifice of children ends tonight.”

The shadow erupted from him, twisting through the ceiling like a living storm.

Caelan screamed as Elara's heartbeat began to slow.

One beat.

Two.

Three.

The black mark vanished from his chest.

Across the kingdom, every cursed child suddenly awakened.

For the first time in three hundred years, the royal bloodline was free.

But Elara fell into her son's arms.

Caelan held her tightly, sobbing.

“Mother, please.”

She smiled weakly.

“Rule kindly.”

Then her heart stopped.

At sunrise, Caelan buried his mother beneath the oldest tree in Valedorn.

Years later, when he became king, he ordered every royal record to carry the same sentence:

No crown is worth the life of a child.

And every year, on the night the curse had finally ended, silver flowers bloomed around Queen Elara's grave.

Some said they were magic.

Others said they were a queen's final blessing.

But Caelan knew the truth.

They bloomed because his mother's heart had become the first thing in three hundred years that the curse could never possess.
