The Queen’s Most Trusted Mage Was Secretly Casting Spells Against Her

PART 1 — The Mage Behind the Throne
Queen Elara first realized something was wrong when the castle bells rang at midnight.
There was no invasion. No assassin had breached the gates. Yet every magical crystal in the royal palace suddenly turned black.
Elara rushed from her chambers and found the throne room filled with cold silver smoke. At its center stood the one person she trusted more than anyone in the kingdom—Master Caelan, the Royal Mage.
He was kneeling before the ancient throne, one hand pressed against the stone floor. Strange symbols glowed beneath his fingers.
“Caelan?” the queen whispered.
The mage looked up.
For the briefest moment, fear crossed his face.
Then he smiled. “Your Majesty. You should not be here.”
Elara stared at the runes beneath him. They were not protection spells.
They were binding spells.
And they were connected directly to her crown.
For twenty years, Caelan had been her guardian, adviser, and closest friend. He had saved her life during the War of Ashes. He had taught her how to control the ancient magic inherited from her mother. When Elara became queen at seventeen, Caelan had sworn an oath to protect her until death.
But now he was secretly casting spells against her.
“What have you done?” Elara demanded.
Caelan slowly stood.
“What I had to do.”
The queen reached for her sword, but pain exploded through her skull. Her knees buckled.
Caelan caught her before she fell.
“The crown is killing you,” he whispered.
Elara froze.
“That is impossible.”
“Your mother knew. Your father knew. And now you know.”
Caelan lifted her toward the throne.
“The crown was forged from the Heart of the First Dragon. Every queen who wears it becomes stronger—but the kingdom feeds upon her life.”
Elara stared at him in disbelief.
“Then why have you spent twenty years protecting it?”
His eyes filled with sorrow.
“Because destroying it without preparation would kill you instantly.”
Before Elara could answer, the palace doors burst open.
Royal guards stormed inside.
The captain pointed his sword at Caelan.
“Step away from the queen!”
Caelan raised his hands.
“Too late.”
The runes beneath the throne suddenly blazed crimson.
And every torch in the palace went out.
PART 2 — The Spell That Changed the Kingdom
Elara awoke beneath the castle.
Chains of blue light surrounded her wrists. Caelan stood nearby, drawing a final circle around an enormous stone altar.
“You imprisoned me,” Elara said bitterly.
“Because you would have stopped me.”
“Of course I would have!”
Caelan looked at her with tears in his eyes.
“That is why I had to betray you.”
He revealed the truth at last.
For generations, the royal family had sacrificed their rulers to keep the kingdom’s protective magic alive. Every queen was told the crown was a symbol of power. In reality, it was a prison.
Elara's mother had discovered the secret and tried to destroy the crown.
The royal council stopped her.
Caelan had failed to save her.
He had spent the next twenty years preparing for Elara’s reign.
Every forbidden spell he cast had weakened the crown. Every mysterious illness she suffered had been caused by him—not to kill her, but to prevent the crown from consuming her too quickly.
“I hated you for every spell,” Elara whispered.
“I know.”
“And you still did it?”
“I would rather have your hatred than your grave.”
Suddenly, the chamber shook.
The royal council had discovered them.
Hundreds of soldiers poured into the underground temple, led by Lord Varick, the queen’s most powerful minister.
“Kill the mage!” Varick commanded.
Caelan turned pale.
“Elara, listen to me. The crown is waking.”
The queen looked toward the altar.
The golden crown appeared above it, floating in the air.
It was screaming.
Not with a human voice, but with the sound of thousands of dead kings and queens.
Elara finally understood.
The crown had never protected the kingdom.
It had controlled it.
She tore herself free from the magical chains and seized Caelan’s hand.
“Finish the spell.”
“It will destroy the crown.”
“Then destroy it.”
Caelan hesitated.
“It may destroy your magic too.”
Elara smiled sadly.
“A queen without magic can still rule. A queen without freedom cannot.”
Caelan completed the final spell.
The crown shattered.
A wave of golden fire swept through the chamber, extinguishing every ancient rune and breaking every magical chain in the kingdom.
When the light faded, Elara stood beside Caelan.
For the first time in a thousand years, the kingdom had no enchanted queen.
It had something far more dangerous.
A free one.
Caelan lowered his head.
“Will you execute me for betraying you?”
Elara looked at the shattered crown.
“No.”
She turned toward the stairs.
“But you are never casting a spell without telling me again.”
For the first time in twenty years, Caelan laughed.
And as the sun rose over the kingdom, the queen walked into the light—knowing that the man who had secretly fought against her was the very man who had saved her.
