The Queen’s Most Trusted Mage Was Secretly Casting Spells Against Her

PART 1 — The Mage Behind the Throne
Queen Elara knew someone was trying to kill her.
She just never imagined the assassin would be the man standing three steps behind her throne.
For twenty years, Archmage Caelan had been her most trusted protector. He had saved her life during the War of Ash. He had broken curses that could have destroyed the royal bloodline. When Elara became queen, Caelan was the first person she placed inside the royal chamber.
She trusted him more than her generals.
More than her council.
More than her own family.
Then, one winter morning, Elara woke with blood running from her nose.
The candles around her bed had turned black.
Her guards found no poison, no assassin, and no broken window. Caelan examined her himself and calmly declared it a harmless magical reaction.
“You are exhausted, Your Majesty,” he said.
But Elara noticed something strange.
His hands were trembling.
Three days later, the queen collapsed during a council meeting.
Again, Caelan was there.
Again, he saved her.
And again, he told everyone it was nothing.
That night, Elara secretly followed him.
Caelan left the palace after midnight and walked beneath the eastern towers. The queen followed at a distance until he entered an abandoned chapel buried beneath the castle.
Inside, dozens of candles burned around a circle of silver symbols.
Caelan stood in the center.
“By the blood of the crown,” he whispered, “let the throne weaken.”
Elara froze.
She watched as a dark spell rose from the floor and wrapped itself around a small golden statue bearing her likeness.
The statue cracked.
At the same moment, pain tore through Elara’s chest.
She nearly screamed.
Then Caelan spoke again.
“Let her power fade, but let her live until the final night.”
Elara stepped backward.
A stone moved beneath her foot.
Caelan turned.
Their eyes met.
For the first time in twenty years, the queen saw no loyalty in her most trusted mage.
She saw sorrow.
PART 2 — The Spell That Changed Everything
“How long?” Elara whispered.
Caelan lowered his head.
“Since the night your father died.”
Elara drew her sword.
“You have been poisoning me with magic for twenty years?”
“No,” Caelan said. “I have been keeping you alive.”
Before Elara could strike, the chapel walls shook.
Hundreds of black runes appeared across the stones.
Caelan grabbed her wrist.
“Listen to me. Your father was not murdered by an enemy kingdom. He was sacrificed by our own royal bloodline.”
Elara stared at him.
“That is impossible.”
“Your family made a pact with the Shadow King generations ago. Every ruler gives the kingdom one heir. In return, the Shadow King protects the throne.”
Caelan pointed toward the golden statue.
“Your father tried to break the pact. The Shadow King killed him. When you became queen, the pact passed to you.”
Elara's face went pale.
“Then why attack me?”
“Because the pact can only be broken when the queen's magic is weak enough to escape the crown.”
Suddenly, the chapel doors exploded inward.
Shadow creatures poured through the entrance.
Caelan stepped between them and Elara.
“You have to trust me one last time.”
He raised both hands.
Every spell he had secretly cast against Elara for twenty years awakened at once.
The queen screamed as silver light erupted from her body.
She finally understood.
Caelan had not been trying to destroy her.
He had been slowly breaking the ancient magic binding her soul to the throne.
But the final spell would kill him.
“Stop!” Elara cried.
Caelan smiled sadly.
“A kingdom needs a queen. It does not need an old mage.”
He completed the spell.
The crown on Elara's head shattered.
A wave of silver fire swept through the chapel, destroying the Shadow King’s mark and every creature born from it.
When the light faded, Caelan was lying on the stone floor.
Elara ran to him.
His eyes opened for only a moment.
“I told you,” he whispered. “I would never betray you.”
“You should have told me the truth.”
“Then you would have stopped me.”
He closed his eyes.
For the first time since becoming queen, Elara removed her crown.
She placed it beside the old mage and walked away without it.
By sunrise, the kingdom knew the truth.
The queen had survived the darkest spell ever cast against her.
And from that day forward, every ruler of the kingdom was taught the same lesson:
Sometimes the person who appears to be destroying your life is secretly sacrificing everything to save it.
