The Witch Offered the Princess One Wish for Her Father’s Life

PART 1 — The Witch in the Black Forest

King Aldric had conquered every enemy who dared threaten his kingdom.

But there was one battle he could not win.

Death.

On the coldest night of winter, the king lay dying beneath a canopy of crimson silk. His crown rested beside him, untouched. His breathing had become so weak that even the royal physicians had stopped pretending they could save him.

Princess Elara stood beside his bed, holding his hand.

She was the only person in the kingdom who could make the mighty king smile.

'Do not leave me,' she whispered.

Her father opened his eyes.

'You were always stronger than you believed.'

Then his eyes closed again.

Elara refused to accept it.

That same night, an old servant told her a secret that had been buried for generations.

Deep inside the Black Forest lived a witch named Morwen. They said she could heal the deadliest wound, reverse the oldest curse, and even command death itself.

But no one ever returned from her cottage unchanged.

Before dawn, Elara took a cloak, a lantern, and her father's silver dagger. She rode alone into the forest.

The trees seemed to move as she passed.

Whispers followed her through the darkness.

When she finally reached the witch's cottage, the door opened by itself.

Morwen was waiting beside a dying fire.

She looked far younger than the stories claimed, with silver hair and eyes as black as midnight.

'You came for your father,' the witch said.

Elara froze.

'How do you know?'

'Because every person who enters my forest comes for something they cannot afford to lose.'

Elara stepped forward.

'Save him.'

Morwen smiled sadly.

'I can.'

Hope struck Elara so suddenly that she almost collapsed.

'What do you want? Gold? Land? The royal treasury?'

'None of those.'

The witch raised one finger.

'I will grant you one wish. One wish powerful enough to return your father to life.'

Elara stared at her.

'And the price?'

Morwen's smile disappeared.

'You will know the price only after you make the wish.'

Silence filled the cottage.

Elara thought of her father's empty throne. She thought of the kingdom without him. She thought of the promise she had made beside his bed.

Finally, she whispered, 'I accept.'

Morwen reached toward her.

'Then choose carefully, Princess. Because once spoken, a wish cannot be undone.'

PART 2 — The Price of Bringing Back a King

Elara closed her eyes.

'I wish for my father to live.'

The lanterns exploded into blue flames.

The cottage shook.

Outside, the forest screamed as thousands of birds fled the trees.

Then everything stopped.

Morwen looked at Elara.

'It is done.'

Elara rushed back to the castle.

When she entered the throne room, she heard cheering.

King Aldric was standing.

Alive.

His servants cried. Soldiers dropped to their knees. Bells rang across the kingdom.

Elara ran into her father's arms.

'You're alive.'

He held her tightly.

'Because of you.'

For one perfect moment, everything was exactly as she had dreamed.

Then Elara noticed something strange.

Her father's eyes were full of fear.

That night, he entered her chamber alone.

'Elara,' he said quietly, 'what did you do?'

'I saved you.'

He shook his head.

'No. You traded for me.'

Elara felt the blood leave her face.

'How do you know?'

The king revealed a black mark spreading across his palm.

'The witch came to me while I was dying.'

He swallowed hard.

'She told me that if you wished me back, death would take something of equal value.'

'What did it take?'

Her father looked at her with tears in his eyes.

'Your future.'

Elara's heart stopped.

Morwen appeared in the doorway.

'Not exactly.'

The princess turned.

The witch raised her hand.

'Your father was destined to die tonight. Your wish changed that. But fate demanded another life.'

Elara whispered, 'Mine?'

'Yes.'

The king stepped between them.

'Take me instead.'

Morwen shook her head.

'The wish was hers. Only she can pay the price.'

Elara looked at her father.

For the first time, she understood the true meaning of the witch's bargain.

She would not die.

She would simply never grow old.

Never marry. Never have children. Never leave the kingdom. She would remain twenty-one forever, watching everyone she loved grow old and disappear.

Elara looked toward the window.

Beyond it, the kingdom was celebrating the return of its king.

She smiled through her tears.

'Then I accept.'

Morwen nodded.

'You already did.'

With those words, the witch vanished.

Years passed.

King Aldric became a wise old ruler. Elara remained exactly as she had been the night she made the wish.

When her father finally died peacefully decades later, she stood beside him, just as she had on that terrible winter night.

He took her hand.

'Was it worth it?'

Elara smiled.

'Every second.'

After he died, she returned to the Black Forest.

Morwen was waiting.

'You finally understand,' the witch said.

Elara nodded.

'A wish is never free.'

Morwen smiled.

'No. But sometimes the price is worth paying.'

And from that day forward, the kingdom told a different story about the immortal princess.

They said she had been cursed.

But Elara knew the truth.

She had not been cursed.

She had chosen.

And sometimes, love was the most dangerous magic of all.
