The Wizard Who Could Raise the Dead—But His Price Was Worse Than Death

PART 1 — The Price of a Second Life


The dead girl opened her eyes three nights after her funeral.


And the first thing she whispered was, "Father, you shouldn't have come."


King Aldren froze.


For seven days, he had refused to leave the castle chapel. His only daughter, Princess Elara, had been killed by an assassin during the Spring Festival. The killer had vanished into the crowd, leaving the kingdom in grief and the king in pieces.


But rumors reached him on the seventh night.


There was a wizard in the Blackwood who could bring back the dead.


His name was Malrec.


People said he had lived for more than two hundred years. They said he could command shadows, speak with ghosts, and make a dead man's heart beat again.


They also said no one had ever received his gift for free.


Aldren rode into the forest alone.


He found Malrec standing beside a ruined stone tower, feeding black flames with pieces of old bone.


"Bring my daughter back," the king demanded.


The wizard didn't look at him.


"Everyone who asks me that says it as if death is a locked door."


Malrec finally turned.


His eyes were pale silver.


"It isn't. Death is a debt."


Aldren stepped closer. "Name your price."


The wizard smiled.


"One life for one life."


The king's jaw tightened.


"Take mine."


"No."


Aldren stared at him.


"Why not?"


"Because you are offering the wrong life."


The wizard walked toward the tower.


"Come back tomorrow night. Bring something that belonged to your daughter. And bring the person you love most in this world."


"Why?"


Malrec stopped at the doorway.


"Because when Elara returns, someone must take her place."


The king returned to the castle before dawn.


He told no one what the wizard had said.


Instead, he searched his daughter's room.


Everything still smelled like her perfume. Her books were stacked beside the window. A silver music box sat on her desk, playing the song she had loved as a child.


Aldren picked it up.
