The Last Dragon Returned to a Kingdom That Betrayed Him

PART 1 — The Dragon Above the Dead Kingdom

On the night the last dragon returned, every bell in the kingdom of Eldoria rang at once.

Farmers dropped their lanterns. Soldiers ran from the walls. Children pointed toward the moon as a shadow larger than a castle swept across the sky.

Then the dragon descended.

His scales were black as burned iron, streaked with glowing red cracks. One golden horn was broken. An old scar crossed his face from his eye to his jaw.

His name was Vaelor.

A hundred years earlier, Vaelor had been Eldoria's greatest protector. He had burned invading armies, carried wounded soldiers from battlefields, and guarded the royal family through three generations of kings.

But the kingdom had betrayed him.

When the last great war ended, the king's council decided dragons were too powerful to remain alive. They feared Vaelor's strength. So they made a secret plan.

They invited him into the royal fortress under the promise of celebration.

Instead, they attacked him with enchanted chains.

Vaelor escaped, but not before the kingdom's greatest mage drove a magical spear through his wing.

He disappeared beyond the northern mountains.

The people believed he died there.

They were wrong.

Now Vaelor hovered above the royal palace, his enormous wings blotting out the stars.

King Aldren stood on the balcony, staring at the creature his ancestors had betrayed.

"You came back," the old king whispered.

Vaelor's golden eyes fixed on him.

"You called me protector," the dragon said, his voice rolling across the city like thunder. "Then you tried to make me a prisoner."

The king's guards raised their weapons.

"Lower them!" Aldren shouted.

But one young captain stepped forward.

"Your Majesty, we can still kill it."

Vaelor slowly opened his jaws.

Fire glowed between his teeth.

"Try."

The captain lowered his sword.

Then Vaelor looked beyond the king, toward the mountains surrounding Eldoria.

"I did not return for revenge."

The king frowned.

"Then why?"

The dragon's expression darkened.

"Because something is coming."

Before anyone could ask what he meant, the ground beneath the capital began to shake.

PART 2 — The Secret Beneath the Throne

A crack split the palace courtyard.

Black smoke poured from beneath the stones, followed by hundreds of pale, skeletal hands.

The soldiers screamed.

Vaelor immediately spread his wings.

"Behind me!" he roared.

The king stared at him in disbelief.

"You said you didn't return for revenge."

"I didn't."

Vaelor released a wall of golden fire.

The creatures vanished inside it.

But more crawled from the earth.

Then the royal mage stepped forward.

Master Orin.

He was the same mage who had once pierced Vaelor's wing.

His hands trembled.

"It has awakened," Orin whispered.

The king turned sharply.

"What has awakened?"

Orin looked at Vaelor.

"The thing we were afraid of."

He revealed the truth.

A century ago, Eldoria had not betrayed Vaelor simply because the council feared dragons. They had discovered an ancient creature sleeping beneath the kingdom—a creature that fed on magic.

They needed Vaelor's power to keep it imprisoned.

But instead of asking for his help, they tried to control him.

When Vaelor escaped, the prison weakened.

For a hundred years, the kingdom had secretly sacrificed its own magic to keep the creature asleep.

Now there was nothing left.

The palace shook violently.

A gigantic eye opened beneath the throne room.

Vaelor looked at the king.

"This is your final chance."

"Chance for what?" Aldren asked.

"To trust the creature you betrayed."

The king dropped his sword.

"Tell me what to do."

Vaelor flew into the collapsing throne room.

Orin followed, carrying the ancient royal crystal—the kingdom's last source of magic.

The creature rose from beneath the palace, a mountain of shadow with burning eyes.

Vaelor attacked first.

Fire collided with darkness, shaking the entire kingdom.

But the dragon was too weak.

His injured wing failed.

He crashed into the throne.

The creature lunged.

Then King Aldren stepped between them.

"No more betrayal."

He raised the crystal.

"If Eldoria survives, it survives with him."

He shattered the crystal.

A storm of magic exploded through the palace.

Vaelor rose.

For one final moment, dragon and king stood together.

Then Vaelor unleashed every flame remaining in his ancient body.

The darkness screamed.

And disappeared.

At sunrise, Eldoria was still standing.

Vaelor landed outside the ruined palace.

The king approached him alone.

"Will you stay?" Aldren asked.

Vaelor looked toward the mountains.

"No."

The king lowered his head.

"I understand."

Vaelor spread his enormous wings.

"But teach your children the truth."

"What truth?"

The dragon looked back one last time.

"A kingdom that betrays its protector may survive without him. But it will never deserve his return."

Then the last dragon rose into the morning sky.

He did not return as a weapon.

He returned as a choice.

And for the first time in a hundred years, Eldoria understood that forgiveness was not the same as forgetting.
