PART 1 — The Shield That Chose the Enemy
At midnight, Queen Elara raised both hands above the walls of Aveloria and spoke the oldest spell in the kingdom.
“Let no enemy pass.”
Golden light exploded across the battlefield.
For one breathtaking moment, everyone believed the kingdom was saved.
Then the light moved.
It swept past Aveloria’s soldiers, ignored the castle walls, and wrapped itself around the invading army.
The enemy soldiers dropped their weapons in confusion.
A shimmering dome formed around them.
Protected.
Untouchable.
Inside the castle, silence fell.
“Your Majesty…” the royal captain whispered.
Elara stared at the battlefield in horror.
She had spent twenty years studying the ancient royal magic. The Shield of Dawn was supposed to protect every living soul within Aveloria’s borders.
It had never failed.
Until tonight.
“Dispel it,” Elara ordered.
Three royal mages tried.
Their spells shattered against the golden barrier.
The enemy commander stepped forward.
He was a tall man wearing black armor, his silver hair blowing in the cold wind. He looked toward the castle.
Then he smiled.
“Finally,” he said.
Elara felt a chill.
“Finally what?” she demanded.
The commander raised his hand and revealed an ancient silver ring.
Elara knew it immediately.
It belonged to her mother.
“Where did you get that?” Elara whispered.
The commander looked toward the throne room.
“Your mother gave it to my father the night she betrayed Aveloria.”
Elara's heart stopped.
Her mother had always been remembered as the greatest queen in Avelorian history. According to the royal records, she had died defending the kingdom from the northern invaders.
But now an enemy commander claimed she had betrayed them.
“Liar,” Elara said.
“Ask your royal historian.”
Elara turned.
Old Master Corvin stood frozen behind her.
He had served three generations of queens.
His face had gone pale.
“Tell me he is lying,” Elara said.
Corvin lowered his eyes.
“He is not.”
The queen felt the world collapse beneath her.
“What did my mother do?”
Corvin swallowed.
“She did not betray the kingdom.”
He looked toward the glowing army.
“She protected it.”
PART 2 — The Secret Beneath the Throne
Corvin led Elara into the oldest chamber beneath the palace.
There, hidden beneath layers of stone, stood a black door covered in ancient runes.
“The first kings of Aveloria made a bargain with the northern clans,” Corvin explained. “They promised never to invade one another.”
“Then why did the war begin?” Elara asked.
“Because your ancestors broke the bargain.”
Behind the door was an ancient crystal glowing with golden light.
Corvin pointed toward it.
“The Shield of Dawn was never created to protect Aveloria.”
Elara stared at him.
“Then what was it created for?”
“To protect the bloodline that created the magic.”
Suddenly, everything made sense.
The spell had not chosen the enemy.
It had chosen the people carrying the blood of Aveloria’s first queen.
The northern commander was her descendant.
So were thousands of soldiers beneath the golden shield.
Elara's mother had discovered the truth decades earlier. She had secretly sent the northern clans away, hoping to end the ancient conflict.
But the royal council had erased the truth and started another war.
“My mother knew,” Elara whispered.
“Yes.”
“And she let everyone believe she died a traitor?”
Corvin nodded.
“Because if the kingdom learned the truth, the ancient royal families would lose their claim to the throne.”
Elara looked toward the battlefield.
The enemy commander was still standing beneath the protective dome.
Then he removed his helmet.
“Queen Elara!” he called.
His voice carried across the walls.
“Your mother left one final message.”
He held up the silver ring.
“She said the next queen would have to choose between her crown and her people.”
Elara looked at the throne room behind her.
For generations, Aveloria had been built upon a lie.
She could preserve the kingdom’s history—or destroy it.
Slowly, Elara walked to the palace balcony.
“Open the gates,” she commanded.
The captain stared at her.
“Your Majesty?”
“Open them.”
The gates rose.
The northern army entered the city, but no sword was raised.
Elara walked directly toward their commander.
He knelt.
“Queen Elara.”
She held out her hand.
“Your people were never my enemies.”
She looked back at the palace.
“The lie was.”
That night, Elara ordered the royal archives opened to everyone.
The old history was rewritten.
The royal council was dissolved.
And the ancient spell was changed forever—not to protect a throne, but to protect every person who lived beneath it.
Years later, travelers would still tell stories about the night the queen's greatest spell protected the enemy.
But Elara always corrected them.
“It did not protect the enemy,” she would say.
“It protected the innocent.”
And beneath the restored palace stood a single stone bearing her mother’s name.
Not traitor.
Not queen.
But the woman who chose peace before anyone else was brave enough to do it.
